Parker Jewish Institute–1199 SEIU Resident Care Specialist Training Program
After completing a unique training program, 14 Certified Nursing Assistants recently became the first class to receive “Resident Care Specialist” certificates. A collaborative effort of 1199 SEIU and Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care & Rehabilitation, this career ladder opportunity encompassed 36 hours of training designed to help CNAs develop specialized skills to meet the overall needs of residents. Focusing on topics such as person-centered care, communication skills, clinical skills, cultural sensitivities, and working with families, the pilot program also helped prepare Certified Nursing Assistants for future career growth. Graduates of the training program are recognized by the Institute as “Resident Care Specialists”, and will act as frontline leaders for their units, handling tasks such as scheduling, fielding questions from family members, and taking part in the weekly review of resident care plans. Parker’s Vice President for Patient Care Services, Sylvia Williams, RN, MA, noted: “We are very proud of these Certified Nursing Assistants. They successfully met the dual challenges of making a great difference in quality of care and advancing their careers.”
