Short Term Rehabilitation-
Sub-Acute Care

More than thirty years ago, Parker Jewish Institute pioneered short term rehabilitation for older adults. Today, the Institute's unique restorative therapy program, reflecting the lifestyle desired by seniors, promotes independence and rapid return to home after rehabilitation from the broad range of surgical procedures, stroke, amputation, injuries and illness.

Our sub-acute rehabilitation program offers state-of-the-art rehabilitation and clinically complex care in a nurturing environment. The average length of stay is two to six weeks.

Distinguished in patient care, research and teaching, the Medical Department includes primary care physicians as well as specialists and a complete roster of consultants. Specialized treatments have been developed to deal with tracheotomies, I.V. therapy, pain management, chemotherapy and wound care management.

We offer favorable nurse-to-patient staffing ratios. Our nursing staff is experienced in caring for complex medical and post-surgical needs that may include pneumonia, coronary bypass surgery, cardio-thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, and orthopedic surgery.

The Stroke and Neurological Rehabilitation program incorporates the most advanced techniques into individualized treatment plans that result in better outcomes and an earlier discharge to home.

The interdisciplinary rehabilitation teams at Parker include physiatrists (physicians who specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation), as well as physical, occupational and speech therapists, recreation therapists, nutritionists, and social workers. There is a fully equipped kitchen, bedroom and bathroom for re-training purposes. Staff also fit prosthetic devices and train patients in the use of adaptive equipment.

Additional ParkerCare services are available to short term rehabilitation patients, among them are:

Food service to meet special dietary needs

Parker is certified as "Kosher" by the Va'ad of Queens, a respected council of Rabbis, and has earned a reputation for excellence in food service. Three appetizing, nutritious meals are provided to each patient daily. Evening snacks are also available. Meals are served on the care units, including a unique, restaurant-like buffet dining option that fosters independence and a "home away from home" health care environment. A nutritionist is available to assist patients in selecting foods, and ensuring that special dietary needs are met.

On-site pharmacy

Parker's on-site pharmacy is staffed by professionals who strive to maximize the benefits of medication therapy. Parker's pharmacists work closely with your physicians and nurses to manage your medication therapy. They monitor your drug therapy through a computerized profile system, and are available for consultation.

Chaplaincy service

The Department of Pastoral Services provides for the free exercise of religion for all patients, residents and staff. We maintain a multi-denominational chapel that is used for religious services and festivals. Services for patients are held weekly, and frequent visits by clergy are encouraged.

The Department's Director is also the Institute's ethicist and is responsible for its medical ethics function.

Medicare, Medicaid, managed care, private pay and many insurance plans are accepted.
