For Your Better Health – March 2022

March is National Kidney Awareness Month!

Kidneys are very important at keeping our body healthy. Learn about prevention and find out if you are at-risk for kidney disease.

Here is some helpful information to keep in mind:

  • Function – Your kidney filters toxins from your blood, activates vitamin D, directs production of red blood cells, balances blood minerals, and regulates blood pressure as well as fluid levels.
  • Risk Factors – You’re at higher risk if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, family history or if you are over the age of 60. If left untreated, kidney disease can lead to nerve damage, cardiac disease, stroke, anemia, high blood pressure, kidney stones/infection, and kidney failure.
  • Prevention – Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water (48-64 ounces) a day, quit smoking, maintain a healthy diet/weight, stay active, and make sure to monitor your blood pressure and sugar levels.
