A Parker Patient Spotlight: Bonnie Kotkin

Diagnosed with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), Bonnie Kotkin came to the Parker Jewish Institute on April 9, 2026, to recover from a tracheostomy. MSA is a rare, incurable neurodegenerative disorder that affects the autonomic nervous system and can cause muscle weakness, stiffness and loss of coordination. As the disease progresses, the muscles of the mouth, tongue, vocal cords and lungs can be affected, making it difficult to breathe and speak. A tracheostomy can help alleviate symptoms.

The Parker Jewish Institute is one of the few skilled nursing facilities in the New York metropolitan area that provides specialized care and rehabilitation for adults recovering from a tracheostomy.



Bonnie and her family selected Parker for her recovery, drawn by the facility’s high-quality medical staff, cleanliness and outdoor amenities. As the mother of four young children, Bonnie valued being in an environment where she could spend meaningful time with her family and create lasting memories together. Bonnie’s children – Riley, 13; twins Madison and Tyler, 10; and Pierce, 7 – love visiting her at Parker, especially spending time at its outdoor park, playground and koi ponds.
