Parker's Mahjong Club Boosts Brain Health and Social Connection
Tuesday, May 27, 2025

The Mahjong Club has become a popular interactive social gathering, at the Parker Jewish Institute. Mahjong is a tile-based game developed in China during the 19th century. This game of skill, strategy and luck, became globally popular in the 20th century, especially within the American Jewish community. Today, the game is also popular among young Asian American adults. Playing mahjong helps cognitive function. It enhances memory and concentration and improves problem-solving skills.
Parker’s Mahjong Club is led by one of our dedicated volunteers. Since many of our patients/residents are new to mahjong, each session is begun with a thorough explanation of the rules, helping everyone build confidence and skill. While the rules and strategy can seem complex at first, our players are learning quickly. Mahjong has become a favorite at Parker, offering a fun way to stay mentally sharp and socially connected.
